Little Acorns is a warm and friendly Mums and Tots group which runs every Monday morning from 10 to 11.30am. Entrance is only £1 per family. The group is organised by Sophie Styles and Katrina Harper. Katrina is the church Family and Children’s worker.
You will be greeted at the church door with a smile and led inside the beautiful building of St Marys. Pews have been removed to make a lovely open space for children to play. Lots of different toys are available from small world play to bricks to role play. They are displayed in a child friendly and accessible way. There is a special and different activity on the stage every week. Mums, Dads, Grans, Aunts and children from new born to 4 years old play happily together. Ex Mums from the group whose children are now at school come back and help. Volunteers also help as an extra pair of hands and interact with both adults and children.
A refreshing variety of drinks are available in a little café area; tea, coffee, squash and water. Hot beverages are served in cups with lids which is a nod to safety. Delicious cakes are there to enjoy. Fruit is also available for those who would like the healthy option.
There are toilets and baby changing facilities available for all to use.
At 11 o’clock everyone stops playing and together tidies up all the toys and equipment. Then children and adults alike join in with well-known songs and rhymes. It is a wonderful opportunity for children to hear a live piano which accompanies the singing. The singing is led with enthusiasm by the Rev Charlie Styles.
A story is read and shared with the children. The story is often from the Bible. A craft activity related to the week’s story is planned and delivered every session in the café; perfect to amuse little hands whilst adult hands can wrap themselves around a mug of tea.
Finally a special Goodbye song is sang at the end of the session and the children go home happy and tired from playing.
Little Acorns has a lighter programme over the summer holidays. However, Sophie kindly hosts a special Little Acorns event in her garden in the summer. There is a bouncy castle and people enjoy a picnic.
Little Acorns is unique in that it is set in a wonderful building steeped in history but provides an up to date warm welcome to today’s families. Well worth a visit.
